ஒரு புதிய ஊரினுள் புத்தர் வந்திருந்தார். அங்கு தனது போதனைகளை வழங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது சீடன் ஒருவன் புத்தரை நோக்கி ஒரு கேள்வி கேட்டான்

“குருவே! உலக மக்களின் வாழ்க்கையாவும் ஒன்றோடு ஒன்று வேறுபட்டது, வறியவன் வாழ்வில் சிரமப் படுகிறான், செல்வந்தனோ வசதியாக இருக்கிறான். ஆனால் இருவருமே வாழ்வில் தேடுவது மகிழ்ச்சியாகவே இருக்கிறதே ஏன்?”

புத்தர் அந்த சீடனைப் பார்த்து புன்னகையுடன்,

“நான் உனக்கொரு கதை சொல்கிறேன் கவனமாகக் கேள்.” என்றார்.

“சொல்லுங்கள் குருவே!” என்றான் சீடன்.

புத்தர் தொடங்கினார்,

“ஒரு ஊரில், ஒரு தெருவோரத்தில் ஒரு பிச்சைக்காரன் இருந்தான். அவ்வூர் மக்களிடம் இரந்து உண்ணும் அவன், தான் தங்கி, உண்டு, உறங்கும் இடத்தை மிகவும் அசுத்தமாக, கடந்து செல்வோர் முகம் சுளிக்கும்படி வைத்திருந்தான்.

  தெருவில் செல்வோரிடம் கையேந்துவான், பொருளோ, உணவோ கிடைத்தால் மகிழ்வான், ஏதும் கிடைக்கவில்லை என்றால் துக்கத்தில் உழல்வான். 

ஒரு நாள் அவன் வாழ்வின் கடைசி நாளாக அமைந்தது, இறந்தான். அவனை அப்புறப் படுத்திவிட்டு அவன் தங்கியிருந்த நாற்றம் பிடித்த இடத்தை சுத்தம் செய்ய முனைந்தார்கள் தெரு மக்கள். 

கூட்டிப் பெருக்கியும் நாற்றம் சகிக்கவில்லை, அவன் படுத்திருந்த இடத்தில் அரையடி வரை தோண்டி, மண்ணை அப்புறப்படுத்தினார்கள். நாற்றம் ஒழிந்தது. அவர்கள் தோண்டிய இடத்தில் ஏதோ ஒரு பொருளும் ஒளிர்ந்தது. அப்பொருளை எடுத்துப் பார்த்த மக்கள், அது பொற் புதையல் என அறிந்ததும் அதிசயித்தனர். 

ஒரு புதையல் தனக்கடியே இருந்தது தெரியாமல் வாழ்க்கை முழுதும் இரந்து உண்டானே அந்த பிச்சைக்காரன் என எண்ணி வியந்தனர்.”

என்று தனது கதையை முடித்தார் புத்தர்.

“நான் கேட்ட கேள்விக்கும் இந்த கதைக்கும் என்ன சம்பந்தம்? புரியவில்லையே குருவே!” என்றான் சீடன்.

புத்தர் விளக்க ஆரம்பித்தார்,

“இந்த கதை ஏதோ ஒரு ஊரில் வாழ்ந்த பிச்சைக்காரனின் கதை அல்ல. வாழ்வில் மகிழ்ச்சியைத் தேடும் அனைவரின் கதையும் இதுவே. 

மனிதன் மகிழ்ச்சியை வெளியில் உள்ள ஒரு பொருளிடமோ அல்லது மற்றொரு மனிதனிடமொ தேடுகிறான். 

ஆனால் அவனுக்கு எல்லையற்ற மகிழ்வைத்தரும் பொருள் அவனுள்ளேயே இருப்பதை அறியாமலேயே உலக வாழ்வை முடிக்கிறான்.

நீ கூறிய, வறியவனின் வாழ்வும், செல்வந்தனின் வாழ்வும் அடிப்படையில் வேறுபட்டதல்ல. அந்த வறியவன் செல்வந்தனானாலும், அந்த செல்வந்தன் செல்வாதி-செல்வந்தன் ஆனாலும் அவர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியை தேடிக்கொண்டேதான் இருப்பார்கள். ஏனென்றால் அவர்கள் தேடுவது வெளியில்.

உன் உள்ளே இருக்கும் மனதை உன்னால் எல்லையற்ற அமைதியில் வைக்க முடிந்தால், அவ்வமைதி கொடுக்கும் ஆற்றலுக்கும் ஆனந்ததிற்கும் அளவே இராது.” 

என்று முடித்தார் புத்தர்..

 The Buddha had come to a new town.  There he was giving his teachings.  Then one of the disciples asked the Buddha a question

 “Guru!  The lives of the people of the world are different from each other, the poor have difficulty in life and the rich are comfortable.  But why are they both so happy looking for life? ”

 The Buddha looked at the demon and smiled,

 "I'll tell you a story. Listen carefully."  said.

 "Tell me, Guru!"  Said the disciple.

 The Buddha began,

 “In one town, there was a beggar on a street.  He ate and drank with the people of Auvergne, where he stayed, ate, and slept in a very dirty place, making the passers-by frown.

   He would shake hands with passers-by on the street, rejoice when he got something or food, and grieve if he did not get anything.

 One day he became the last day of his life and died.  The street people pushed him aside and tried to clean up the stinking place where he was staying.

 The accumulators did not tolerate the stench, so they dug up to halfway to where he was lying and disposed of the soil.  The odor disappeared.  Something glowed in the place where they had dug.  The people who saw the object were amazed to know that it was a treasure of gold.

 They thought he was a beggar who had lived his whole life without knowing that he had a treasure of his own. ”

 The Buddha ended his story with that.

 “What has this story got to do with the question I asked?  I do not understand, Guru! ”  Said the disciple.

 The Buddha began to explain,

 “This story is not the story of a beggar who lived in a certain town.  This is the story of everyone who seeks happiness in life.

 Man seeks happiness with an external object or with another human being.

 But he ends his worldly life without knowing that the object of infinite happiness is within him.

 As you said, the life of the poor is not fundamentally different from the life of the rich.  Even if the poor man is rich and the rich man is rich-rich, they will always be looking for happiness.  Because what they are looking for is outside.

 If you can keep the mind within you in infinite peace, there will be no limit to the energy and joy that peace can bring. ”

 The Buddha concluded ..
