Throughout Shaivite and Vedic literature, there are instances where demonic beings perform severe penances for Shiva in order to recieve boons. Shiva, will grant the boons upon being satisfied by the penances. And there are even instances when the demons turn on Shiva and try to hurt him WITH the boons; yet Shiva refuses to hurt them back. So why does Shiva comply with demons?

There is a quote by Mark Twain which can help us understand the pure nature of Shiva, "But who prays for Satan? Who in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most, our one fellow and brother who most needed a friend yet had not a single one." Shiva sees all his devotees as the same. Shiva's nature is undifferentiated, without bias for one or another.

Yet, it is not only demons who worship Shiva. In India, all beings who have been considered God, actually worshipped Shiva. Krishna worshipped Shiva, daily, during the Kurukestra war. Rama, the perfect man, was a pure devotee, as well. 

The blessed Vishnu said, 'I saluted Mahadeva, saying,--Salutations to thee, O thou that art the eternal origin of all things. The Rishis say that thou art the Lord of the Vedas. The righteous say that thou art Penance, thou art Sattwa, thou art Rajas, thou art Tamas, and thou art Truth.

 ஷைவ மற்றும் வேத இலக்கியங்கள் முழுவதும், வரங்களை பெறுவதற்காக பேய் மனிதர்கள் சிவனுக்கு கடுமையான தவங்களை நிகழ்த்திய சம்பவங்கள் உள்ளன.  சிவன், தவங்களால் திருப்தி அடைந்தவுடன் வரங்களை வழங்குவார்.  பேய்கள் சிவனைத் திருப்பி, வரங்களுடன் அவரை காயப்படுத்த முயற்சித்த சம்பவங்கள் கூட உள்ளன;  இன்னும் சிவன் அவர்களைத் துன்புறுத்த மறுக்கிறார்.  சிவன் ஏன் பேய்களுடன் இணங்குகிறான்?

 சிவனின் தூய்மையான தன்மையைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள உதவும் மார்க் ட்வைனின் ஒரு மேற்கோள் உள்ளது, "ஆனால் சாத்தானுக்காக யார் ஜெபிக்கிறார்கள்? பதினெட்டு நூற்றாண்டுகளில், மிகவும் தேவைப்படும் ஒரு பாவிக்காக ஜெபிக்க பொதுவான மனிதநேயம் கொண்டவர், நம்முடைய ஒரு சக மற்றும்  ஒரு நண்பருக்கு மிகவும் தேவைப்படும் சகோதரர் இன்னும் ஒருவரை கூட கொண்டிருக்கவில்லை. "  சிவன் தனது பக்தர்கள் அனைவரையும் ஒரே மாதிரியாகவே பார்க்கிறார்.  சிவனின் இயல்பு ஒன்று அல்லது இன்னொருவருக்கு சார்பு இல்லாமல், வேறுபடுத்தப்படவில்லை.

 ஆனாலும், சிவனை வழிபடுவது பேய்கள் மட்டுமல்ல.  இந்தியாவில், கடவுளாகக் கருதப்பட்ட அனைத்து உயிரினங்களும் உண்மையில் சிவனை வணங்கின.  குருகேஸ்த்ரா போரின்போது கிருஷ்ணர் தினமும் சிவனை வணங்கினார்.  பரிபூரண மனிதரான ராமரும் ஒரு தூய பக்தர்.

 ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்பட்ட விஷ்ணு, 'நான் மகாதேவாவுக்கு வணக்கம் செலுத்தி, - உனக்கு வணக்கங்கள், நீ, எல்லாவற்றின் நித்திய தோற்றம்.  நீ வேதங்களின் இறைவன் என்று ரிஷிகள் கூறுகிறார்கள்.  நீ தவம் என்று நீதியுள்ளவர்கள், நீ சத்வா, நீ ராஜாக்கள், நீ தமாஸ், நீ சத்தியம் என்று கூறுகிறார்கள்.
